United States: On a global scale, there is an upsurge of measles in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, and in some parts of Europe.

11x Surge in Measles Cases

North and South America recorded 11 times higher in 2025 compared to the previous year.

In Europe, the rate of measles has reached the highest level over the last 25 years. In the US, there have been 935 cases of measles reported by health authorities, as of May 2, 2025, in 30 different states.

Canada Battles Major Outbreak

Such a considerable increase compares with 285 cases reported in the year 2024. A massive wave of measles is also taking place in Canada, with more than 1,000 cases.

The Conversation sought a commentary from a specialist working in the field of pediatric infectious diseases, Rebecca Schein, to answer what this rise at home and abroad can mean for the disease that had been declared eliminated from the US in 2000, sciencealert.com reported.

Speaking of measles outbreaks, the cases reported in the period of 2000-2010 in the United States did not exceed 100 per annum.

There have been re-emerging outbreaks in 2010 up to now, with individual outbreaks mainly occurring in unvaccinated communities, with about 200 to 300 cases yearly.

The recent large outbreak in the United States occurred in 2019, and it consisted of 1,274 cases, mainly in the New York City metropolitan area and some of New Jersey.

Cases dropped from 2020 to 2023 in the COV1D-19 pandemic, returning to the pre-pandemic level in 2024. While most of the current cases in the US are being experienced in the epidemic in Texas, 702 confirmed cases have been reported up to May 6, 2018.

Among them, 91 people were hospitalized, and three people, two of whom were children, were killed.

Reports about measles cases are still being done. Texas is one of 12 measles outbreaks that were reported in the US in 2025.

North America and South America are at high risk of measles, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), as sciencealert.com reported.

Canada itself reported a total of 1,177 cases as of April 19, with 951 of them linked to an outbreak that started in October 2024 in New Brunswick and spread to seven other provinces.
