FDA Alerts: Tattoo Inks Contaminated with Harmful Bacteria

United States: The US Food and Drug Administration(FDA) is reminding consumers and tattoo artists that two inks used to create tattoos are contaminated with bacteria that may cause severe infections.

Through testing on the FDA, the inks were contaminated by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which, if administered to the skin, could cause infections.

More about the news

If not treated properly, these infections may result in red rashes, bumps, or lesions and may result in permanent scars, according to an FDA news release, as US News reported.

“There is an increased risk of infection any time the skin barrier is broken,” according to the FDA.

Sometimes, symptoms of infection can be mistaken for an allergic reaction, and this can cause one to get the wrong treatment.

What more are the officials stating?

The FDA found the dirt in the inks during a routine check of tattooing products. The agency used microbiological testing procedures characteristic of cosmetics.

These particular inks are discouraged for use or distribution by tattoo artists and studios. Consumers are advised to inquire from their tattoo artist what inks are being used and to stay away from the affected products

The FDA told NetDoctor that it is collaborating with manufacturers and distributors to remove this product from the market, US News reported.

If somebody reacts to getting a tattoo, they should consult with a healthcare provider and report the problem to the FDA’s SmartHub.
