United States: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a level 2 travel notice (practice enhanced precautions) regarding yellow fever in South America because of increasing case numbers.

CDC Issues Travel Alert

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) presented an alert this month about expanding yellow fever infections throughout South America.

The number of confirmed cases of human yellow fever during the first three months of 2025 reached 131, with 53 people perishing because of the virus, cidrap.umn.edu reported.

During the entire year of 2024, 61 individuals were diagnosed with yellow fever, and thirty of those patients died from it.

Caution urged to travellers

People traveling to yellow fever transmission areas should protect themselves from mosquito bites because the disease exists within those populations.

The majority of yellow fever situations resolve on their own, yet 15% of yellow fever virus infections advance to serious sickness, which causes liver problems and bleeding alongside shock, organ failure, and skin yellowing, and death sometimes occurs, as stated by the CDC

According to the travel alert, travelers visiting this area must receive their yellow fever vaccination within ten days before departing from the United States, cidrap.umn.edu reported.

Vaccination Urged Before Travel

People who were vaccinated ten years ago should consider receiving a booster. All areas of South America except Chile and most major regions of Argentina require yellow fever vaccination, according to the CDC travel alert website.
